As you are aware, there are several community groups which exist to serve their fellow citizens. Rotary clubs are one of the better known and most active community organizations in the world. They are responsible for raising millions of dollars for charitable organizations and as of date there are over 30,000 clubs around the globe.

The Rotary club began in 1905 with the motto of Service above Self which denotes their primary purpose in serving their community. Each club is made up of local business professionals and leaders of the community. At one time admission was limited to men only. However in 1989 membership was opened to include women.

To be a Rotarian, you must have at some time served as a leader in the community or held an executive position in an approved business. People are invited into the club, and must have a good reputation within the community, in both personal and professional matters. The organization is not active in religious or political circles, and is open to all races, creeds and cultures.

Each club is entrusted by the international group with for primary responsibilities. They are to maintain and increase membership levels, serve both the local and international community, financially support the Rotary Foundation, and develop leaders from within the club to serve.

Members are asked to apply the Four Way Test to all of their business and personal dealings. The test has the member to always be certain their actions are truthful, beneficial, fair, and that they build goodwill to all involved. This test helps to keep the group one of the most well respected of all community organizations.

Rotary International is an organization which works with goals, both long term and those within the foreseeable future. A long term goal of rotary clubs is to completely wipe out polio, and the short term goals are to end illiteracy and aid the welfare of children. They are also involved in ending hunger and protecting the environment.
